How to write a book description

A book description has one job: to help the right reader decide that this book solves their problem. Shoppers skim it, often on a phone, so short paragraphs and a bulleted list work better than a wall of text. KDP's own guidance is to aim for about 150 words of short, simple sentences. A clear nonfiction description usually has five parts:

  1. The hook. One line, often a heading, that names the reader's problem or goal. A shopper decides whether to keep reading here.
  2. The problem and the promise. Two or three sentences about where the reader is now and what changes after reading. Write to the reader as "you".
  3. What the reader will learn. A short bulleted list of three to five things the reader will be able to do. Bullets are easy to scan on a phone.
  4. Who the book is for. One sentence about the reader the book was written for, and who it is not for. This sets honest expectations.
  5. The close. One sentence that restates what the reader gets. Leave out prices, links, and requests for reviews, which KDP does not allow.

[Heading: the reader's problem or goal in one line]

[Two or three sentences: where the reader is now,
and what changes for them after reading.]

In this book, you will learn how to:
- [First thing the reader will be able to do]
- [Second thing]
- [Third thing]

[Who the book is for, and who it is not for.]

[One closing sentence about what the reader gets.]

KDP book description rules

The description can hold up to 4,000 characters, and the HTML tags count toward that total. Bolding one word adds 7 characters for the opening and closing tags. KDP accepts these tags: br, p, b, em, i, u, h4, h5, h6, ol, ul, and li. The generator produces only those tags and removes everything else, including fonts and colors pasted from other programs.

KDP does not accept any of the following in a description:

  • Phone numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses, and website URLs.
  • Reviews, quotes, testimonials, and requests for customer reviews.
  • Advertising, promotional material, prices, and ordering information.
  • Time-sensitive information such as event dates.
  • Spoilers, keywords or tags, and emojis.

Praise from other authors or the press belongs in the Editorial Reviews section of Author Central, not in the description.

Before you publish

The description is one part of the listing. Check your seven keyword boxes with the KDP keyword checker, so they do not repeat your title or break KDP's keyword rules. KDP also asks you to disclose AI-generated text, images, or translations when you publish a new book or republish an edited one, even if you edited the AI output heavily. TailoredRead books are AI-generated, so you tick the AI disclosure box when you publish them. KDP limits each account to 2 new titles per format per week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Book Description Generator.

How do I write a book description?
Open with the reader's problem or goal in one line. Then say what the book covers and what the reader will be able to do afterward, list the main topics as a few bullets, say who the book is for, and close with one sentence about what the reader gets. The template in the generator follows this structure.
How long should a book description be?
KDP allows up to 4,000 characters, and the HTML tags count toward that limit. Its help page suggests aiming for a paragraph of about 150 words with short sentences that are easy to scan. Most nonfiction descriptions use a few short paragraphs and a bulleted list.
Which HTML tags work in a KDP description?
KDP accepts br, p, b, em, i, u, h4, h5, h6, ol, ul, and li. It does not support h1, h2, or h3. The generator produces only those tags and removes everything else, including styles pasted from Word or Google Docs.
What is not allowed in a KDP book description?
Phone numbers, mailing and email addresses, website URLs, reviews, quotes and testimonials, requests for reviews, advertising and promotional material, time-sensitive information such as event dates, prices and availability, spoilers, keywords or tags, and emojis. The generator flags text that looks like any of these.
How do I paste the HTML into KDP?
Click Copy HTML for KDP. On your book's details page in KDP, click Source in the description box, paste the HTML, and switch back to see the formatted result. You can also format the description directly in KDP's own editor, but the generator shows the character count with tags and checks the content first.
Does this tool write my description with AI?
No. It formats and checks a description you write, using fixed rules, and offers a fill-in template to start from. If you create a book with TailoredRead, the book plan includes a drafted description that you can edit and paste here.
