Which trim size should a nonfiction book use?

6 x 9 inches is the usual choice for nonfiction. It is a widely used paperback size for business, how-to, and self-help books, it prints at the lower regular-trim price, and it works on white paper, cream paper, and premium color. It also qualifies for Expanded Distribution in all three. Choose 5.5 x 8.5 for a shorter, more compact book, and a large trim such as 7 x 10 only when the layout needs the room, for example for workbooks with exercises. Large trims cost more to print, which lowers your royalty or raises the price you must charge.

Trim size also decides how many pages your words fill. Use the words to pages calculator to estimate it, and the royalty calculator to see what that trim costs to print.

How KDP margins work

The inside margin, called the gutter, is the space next to the binding. A thicker book curves more into the spine, so KDP requires a wider gutter as the page count rises. The outside, top, and bottom margins have a fixed minimum that depends on bleed.

Page countMinimum inside margin (gutter)
24-1500.375 in
151-3000.5 in
301-5000.625 in
501-7000.75 in
701-8280.875 in
Margins and page size
Outside, top, bottom: 0.25 in without bleed, 0.375 in with bleed
Page size without bleed = trim size
Page size with bleed = (trim width + 0.125 in) x (trim height + 0.25 in)

Example: 6 x 9 in, 250 pages, no bleed
Gutter 0.5 in, outside 0.25 in, live area 5.25 x 8.5 in

These are minimums. Most books look better with larger margins, around 0.5 to 0.75 inches on the outside, so text does not crowd the page edge.

Bleed and Expanded Distribution

Bleed means artwork that runs to the very edge of the page. It matters only if your interior has images or backgrounds that reach the edge. If you use it, your PDF page is larger than the trim size, and KDP trims the extra off. A text-only interior needs no bleed.

Expanded Distribution makes your paperback available to bookstores, libraries, and other retailers outside Amazon. It is not available for every trim: the table above shows which trims qualify for each paper type. Custom trim sizes never qualify, and the royalty is 40% of the list price minus printing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the KDP Trim Sizes and Margins.

What is the best trim size for a nonfiction book?
6 x 9 inches is the most common choice for nonfiction. It is a regular (not large) trim, so printing costs less than for larger sizes, it qualifies for Expanded Distribution on white paper, cream paper, and premium color, and it supports up to 828 pages on white paper. 5.5 x 8.5 is a reasonable alternative for shorter books.
What are KDP's margin requirements?
The inside margin (gutter) depends on page count: 0.375 inches for 24-150 pages, 0.5 for 151-300, 0.625 for 301-500, 0.75 for 501-700, and 0.875 for 701-828. Outside, top, and bottom margins must be at least 0.25 inches without bleed and 0.375 inches with bleed.
Do I need bleed in my interior file?
Only if images, backgrounds, or illustrations should reach the edge of the page. Most text-only nonfiction does not need it. With bleed, the page is the trim width plus 0.125 inches and the trim height plus 0.25 inches.
What makes a trim size large?
A trim wider than 6.12 inches or taller than 9 inches counts as large and costs more to print. 6 x 9 is regular. 6.14 x 9.21 and 7 x 10 are large.
Can I use a custom trim size?
Yes. KDP accepts custom widths from 4 to 8.5 inches and heights from 6 to 11.69 inches. Custom sizes do not qualify for Expanded Distribution.
