How words convert to pages

A page holds a fixed number of words only for a fixed layout. Divide your word count by the words per page of that layout to get pages, or multiply pages by words per page to get words. A double-spaced manuscript page holds about 275 words. A single-spaced page holds about 550. A printed 6 x 9 page set in 11-point type holds about 350.

Conversion
Pages = words / words per page
Words = pages x words per page

Example: 80,000 words in a 6 x 9 book at 11 pt
Pages = 80,000 / 350 = about 229

The printed-book figures come from a simple layout model: the text area left after margins, the number of characters that fit on a line at your font size, 1.3 line spacing, and a 15% allowance for headings, short last lines, and chapter openings. It is an estimate, and the range shown allows for 10% either way.

What changes the page count

  • Font size and typeface. Smaller type and narrower letterforms fit more words on a page.
  • Line spacing and margins. Looser spacing and wider margins reduce words per page.
  • Trim size. A 6 x 9 page holds more words than a 5 x 8 page at the same font size.
  • Structure. Chapter openings, headings, lists, block quotes, and images all leave white space.
  • Front and back matter. Title page, copyright page, contents, and about-the-author pages add to the total.

From word count to a KDP paperback

KDP paperbacks run from 24 pages up to 828 pages on white paper, depending on the trim size and paper. Once you have a page estimate, check the trim sizes and page limits, then price the book with the KDP royalty calculator. Printing cost rises with every page, so a longer book needs a higher list price to keep the same royalty.

Students can use the manuscript formats the same way: double-spaced 12-point is the common format for essays and papers, and the estimate is a starting point. Check your assignment's own rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Words to Pages Calculator.

How many words are in a 200-page book?
It depends on the page format. A 6 x 9 paperback set in 11-point type holds about 350 words per page, so 200 pages is roughly 70,000 words. A double-spaced manuscript holds about 275 words per page, so 200 manuscript pages is about 55,000 words.
How many pages is 80,000 words?
About 230 pages in a 6 x 9 paperback at 11 pt, about 290 double-spaced manuscript pages, and about 145 single-spaced pages. Front matter, images, and chapter breaks add pages.
How many words are on a page?
A double-spaced page in 12-point type holds about 250 to 300 words, and a single-spaced page about 500 to 600. A printed 6 x 9 page holds roughly 300 to 450 words, depending on the font size and spacing.
Why is the page count only an estimate?
Page count depends on the typeface, line spacing, margins, images, headings, and where chapters start. The calculator states the assumptions it uses, and the range shown allows for 10% either way. Set up your real file to get the exact number.
How long are TailoredRead books?
You choose from four lengths before you pay: Short (30-50 pages), Essential (70-100), Detailed (150-200), and Comprehensive (250-300). Those are tablet-sized pages, so they do not match printed 6 x 9 pages one for one.
